Andrea Hans, Team Full Throttle’s NASCAR Driver Development racer, is
trying to get the most she can out of her first season in a Legends car.
At a race in Indiana a few weeks ago, she was fast as she’s been all season before a broken rear end sidelined her following practice.
“It’s a setback,” Hans said. “We were encouraged because in practice I was keeping up with the faster cars and doing pretty well. Toward the end (of practice), I started to feel a vibration but wasn’t sure what it was. When I pulled into the pits there was a problem and it ended up being the rear end.”
It was a let down for Hans, but she and her team will continue to focus on gaining experience before traveling to the Charlotte, N.C. area in late July to compete in Legends car races at Concord Motorsport Park.
going to try our best to have the car ready for the next race at
Anderson . Right now, it’s just me and my dad so we have a lot of work
ahead of us. We’re looking forward to the next race. I think we’re
getting closer,” Hans added.
How did you get into racing?
My parents bought me a yard go-kart; I loved it so much that we started to look at many different options of racing and we found Quarter Midgets. After three years in Quarter Midgets, we thought it was clear that I was serious about making it my future. Then we signed with Team Full Throttle and they advised us to move up to the Legends series.
What are you currently driving and where can people see you race?
I am currently racing what is called Legends series. A Legends car has a 5/8 scale 34 ford coupe-body with a late model style chassis. The public can watch me race at many different places this summer. There are three different places in Indiana : the Speedrome, located in Indianapolis ; Anderson Motor Speedway, located in Anderson; and Illiana Motor Speedway, located in Schererville. This summer I will participate in two races at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Charlotte , North Carolina . That will be viewed on the ESPN sometime this summer.
What do you hope to accomplish this season?
This year I hope to accomplish many things. I wish to receive the rookie of the year award at Anderson Motor Speedway. Also, when I go to North Carolina I hope to work with Kyle Beattie racing and learn many things with them. In addition, I hope to learn how to represent my sponsors and myself.
Have you looked into any diversity initiatives for women in racing?
Are they something that appeal to you? Being the first women in Team Full Throttle, I look forward to being a role model for anybody that has a dream, and that it’s possible to do whatever they want.
For you, would the ultimate goal be running in IndyCar or NASCAR someday?
I hope to stay close wheel racing, whether it is the NASCAR cup or the truck series. The reason why I think this is because I think that it would be more of a challenge for me to accomplish in the near future.
What does Danica Patrick's IndyCar win mean for women in motorsports?
Danica has set an excellent example on the track for women in any form of racing. She has great qualities on the track, and has proved that not just men can dominate on the track, but also women.
Who are your racing heroes?
One of my most favorite heroes has been Mark Martin. He has shown me that racing is not only a job to make money, but it is also to have fun. Furthermore, he shows excellent sportsmanship towards other racers, he does not make enemies. My other hero is anyone who has a passion for this sport.
