Who Says Women Can't Drive Stick?

Posted by AskPatty - Automotive Advice for Women at May 14th, 2008 5:56pm

I love driving a manual transmission. My current vehicle, a 1998 Honda Accord, has racked up nearly 145,000 miles on the original clutch, and it’s still going strong. Almost every car I’ve ever owned was a manual, except for the beautiful classic 1968 Ford Mustang I owned in college. All said, I think I’ve put more than 500,000 miles on manual transmissions over my lifetime. And, I’ve done quite a ...

Chrissy Wallace wants to be NASCAR's 'Danica'

Posted by AskPatty - Automotive Advice for Women at May 12th, 2008 5:50pm

Chrissy Wallace’s NASCAR debut a few weeks ago at Martinsville Speedway went quite smashingly. The 19-year-old daughter of driver Mike Wallace climbed behind the wheel in the Kroger 250, and looked like she’d been driving in the Craftsman Truck Series for seasons. She avoided the pitfalls many drivers face in their NASCAR debuts, and earned an 18th-place finish for Germain Racing. Wallace raced all 253 laps, ...

Posted by AskPatty - Automotive Advice for Women at May 7th, 2008 5:45pm

Maryland may require children to be in car seats an extra two years under a bill put in front of the state House and Senate. Currently the law requires a booster up to age six. The new law would extend it to eight years. The bill follows national recommendations about how old kids should be before going without a booster seat. Maryland was first in the Mid-Atlantic to pass a booster seat law, but the bill’s ...

Saving gas at the pump helps the environment too

Posted by AskPatty - Automotive Advice for Women at May 7th, 2008 5:40pm

Gasoline is volatile hence prone to vaporization. The smell from your tank, when first opened, is that of trapped and pressurized gasoline vapors escaping. Also when you pump, the splashes within the fuel tank encourages fumes to escape, which is why all pumps in gas stations in the United States have caps on them. Recently, I learned about a way to save gas, that I have not heard of, so perhaps AskPatty readers ...

Top Tips to Improve Your Vehicle's Fuel Economy

Posted by AskPatty - Automotive Advice for Women at May 5th, 2008 5:39pm

I remember how shocking it was the first time I saw Los Angeles-area gas stations advertising prices at $3 per gallon--this was about a year ago, in May 2007. And recently, barely eleven months later, I drove past a station at which the price for their premium fuel was over $4!! (The photos associated with this article were taken April 10, at several stations in the San Fernando Valley.) At AskPatty.com, we recognize ...

A recent article at USA Today reports that obesity may be what causes some truckers to doze while driving. Last month, the medical review board of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration was scheduled to finalize recommendations about truckers and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a condition in which people constantly reawaken for lack of air, says Maggi Gunnels, the agency's director of medical programs. The ...
