We would all like our schools to be more environmentally friendly. But budget cuts and old facilities don’t help in going green. Ford Motor Company would like to help. Ford joined with ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” on Educate to Escape — a green school makeover campaign. They’re sponsoring a contest and one lucky school will get $250,000 for a makeover. Anyone can nominate a ...

Having Fun With Climate Change -- A Multimedia Overview

Posted by AskPatty - Automotive Advice for Women at Apr 22nd, 2008 7:39pm

Climate change, global warming, ice shelf breaking, ocean current stopping. Climate change can be depressing and scary. It invokes fear, especially with children, who may feel their future is threatened yet feel powerless. It also makes for some contentious dinner discussion. I have been through all that. So today, I'd rather focus on some fun climate change multimedia. They are no less educational, but ...

Electric motorbikes - where will they be marketable?

Posted by AskPatty - Automotive Advice for Women at Mar 19th, 2008 3:36pm

First, electric cars. Now electric scooters. Would this be another class of vehicle to go zero-emission soon? I sure hope so, for the millions of motorbikes that are polluting the air in developing countries. Here is a picture of Ho Chih Minh City in Vietnam during rush hour. I have tried crossing the street (there is no choice if you are a pedestrian there) and it is real scary. Here is a picture of ...

Vote for America's Favorite Mom

Posted by AskPatty - Automotive Advice for Women at Mar 17th, 2008 10:12pm

Before I got my license, my mom drove me everywhere. I had band practice, choir, FHA, Beta Club, and church activities. She never complained about playing chauffeur. In fact, I think she enjoyed the time we would spend on the way talking about, well, everything. And when I was old enough, she helped teach me to drive. She let me drive to church. Mom didn’t get (too) mad when I hit the side of the garage with her ...

Michelle Theriault grew up with her and her father, David, watching family friends race Quarter Midgets at local race tracks in Connecticut. When Michelle was five, she saw a race car for sale and asked to sit in it. The moment she hoped in, the race car driver from within emerged. She turned to her Dad and said, "I want this." Theriault competed in Quarter Midge, and earned 200 wins. She is the five ...

GPS For A Directionally Challenged Woman Driver

Posted by AskPatty - Automotive Advice for Women at Mar 7th, 2008 9:34pm

I navigate by landmark, so directions can be very challenging. Landmarks work well when you are already familiar with a place. The bank is right next to the big old city hall that is painted yellow and I can see its big dome from afar. The entrance is right down the road that passes the front of city hall, flanked by two tall, distinctive-looking redwood trees. As I cruise around neighborhoods I know, familiar ...

So You Want to Buy a New Car?

Posted by AskPatty - Automotive Advice for Women at Feb 27th, 2008 10:05am

CNN found that 75% of people surveyed would rather go to the dentist than a car dealership. Most people do however love driving their new car off the dealership lot. Emotions run high when buying a new car. Never be afraid to walk away from a car deal if it doesn't feel right. On the other hand, if your questions have been answered and the deal feels right, take a deep breath, buy your car, and enjoy the drive ...
