As the CEO of a company that champions the equitable treatment of women in the automobile-shopping realm, Jody DeVere’s work includes training automobile salespeople in regard to what’s inappropriate when a woman shops for a vehicle—new or used—at their dealership.
The head of AskPatty.com has addressed members of National Automobile Dealers Association and Auto Shows of North America, among others. Nevertheless, a frequent complaint by women that her organization continues to hear is disrespectful treatment from automobile dealer salespeople. This includes being called “baby,” among other insensitive terms. Right along with this: being asked whether they want to consult their husband, DeVere says. Her reaction: Not only isn’t the woman treated like an independent adult who can assess and judge on her own, but the salesperson is jumping to the conclusion that the woman has a husband. Surprisingly, this treatment can come from female and male salespeople.
