Dubai Auto Show Diary -- Day One

Published Nov 13th 2007, 12:46am by Jody DeVere in Featured Articles

Dubai I arrived in Dubai after more than 30 hours traveling from the Los Angeles area, one day before the start of the Dubai Auto Show 2007 events here, as a guest of General Motors.

I felt immediately at home as the shuttle bus drove me from Emirates Airlines Flight 2 to the terminal, eyeing and grinning at the sign of a large auto dealer and Castrol just across the street. Yes! The Dubai residents LOVE their cars, too. In fact, even at 2am traffic was pretty heavy as we traveled over the quite modern freeway system to my hotel in the Cadillac Escalade sent by GM to pick me up. How appropriate!

Dubai is rated as one of the top three worst countries to drive in due to the poor road safety scores and high accident rates. Seems the need for speed is hard to control here. so renting a car was not an option for me on this trip. They do provide a driving safety school over at the Dubai Race and Drive Center at the Autodrome and many employers require drivers to complete it. I read an article today written by a woman resident who took the course and recommends women here to take it too, to get over driving jitters caused by the high incident of fender benders here.

Dubaitall The hotel is quite luxurious and located directly across the street from the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre where the auto show festivities will be held. I can see the bustle going on in preparation from my hotel perched high above, with a bird’s eye view of Dubai's modern city skyline, mosques and the shoreline of the Persian Gulf. I see an amazing panoramic view from my window of the striking contrast of the old and new Arab cultures blending here.

Sunday night I will spend a much anticipated night of glitz and glamour in the company of more than a dozen of the most glamorous celebrities of the Arab world. Egyptian superstar Yousra, Ramadan TV series top star Milad Yousef, glamorous actress Sulaf Fawakherji, music super star Ragheb Alama, Waad, Yuri Mrakadi and Ruwaida are just a few of the names on the celebrity list, which also includes actors Tamer Hagras, Dalia El Behery, singers Rola Saad, Karl Wolf and UAE rapper Kaz Money. Rachel Hunter, one of the world's most famous supermodels will join the glamorous list of regional celebrities for this parade of cars and stars.

GM Style Dubai is a unique event that combines a bevy of A-list celebrities alongside some of the most beautiful vehicles General Motors has produced in its 100 years of design innovation will take place at the Madinat Jumeriah Arena Sunday evening, November 11th.

I have a grandson with autism and this event is very special for me personally for many reasons. I feel very honored GM invited me and look forward to taking part in the festivities as the celebrities are donating their time in support of Dubai Autism Center which will receive proceedings from ticket sales and fundraising activities during the event.
