Who would have thought you could send a Chevrolet Sonic off a ramp more than 89 feet, and then drive it away after landing? It’s even more surprising to hear that the car was actually launched IN REVERSE!
The 89-foot, 3.25-inch reverse ramp jump set a Guinness World Record before spectators on Thursday, February 13, 2014, at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, California. It’s the second record for the Sonic subcompact, both efforts by Chevrolet to draw attention to the safety and youthful fun factor of its sporty little car. It’s also the 22nd record set by MTV-reality and action sports-star Rob Dyrdek, who filmed this record attempt for the Season Finale of “Fantasy Factory,” which is scheduled to air on March 13, 2014 at 10:30 PM ET/PT on MTV.
In order to qualify for the Guinness World Records achievement, Dyrdek had to successfully land the Sonic on the catch ramp and be able to drive away from the stunt. He did both. In Dyrdek’s first record with the Chevrolet Sonic, Dyrdek launched the car off a ramp in a skateboard style “Kick Flip.”

As with any high-speed action stunts, safety is a priority: Even though it’s a small car, the Chevrolet Sonic offers 10 standard air bags and high-strength steel as part of its body structure, making the small car a strong choice for this challenge. In fact, Chevrolet is especially proud of the car's excellent safety rating: Sonic is the first and only car in its class to receive a 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score for safety from the National Highway Traffic Administration, and the 2013 model was named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
