The Power of Women
Original Air Date: November 16, 2006
Women are flexing their financial muscles more than ever before, earning more money and gaining increased buying power. They're also taking on tasks formerly thought of as "the man's job," including buying cars and making home improvements. For advice that either of the sexes could certainly use, Jean talks to two guests: Heidi Baker, founder of a home improvement website directed at women, and Jody DeVere, founder of a website that offers women automotive advice and information.

Heidi's advice for taking on home improvements
  • Know that something is going to go wrong, and accept it when it does, says Heidi.
  • Let yourself use tools that are seemingly made for a man. There is no reason to purchase a woman's set.
  • Weigh your options. You could buy a home that is complete or you could purchase a fixer-upper. While it's probably easier to buy the complete home, you'll be surprised at how much better you'll feel if you put a little of yourself—and your work—into your house.
  • Know your limits. Leave electrical and plumbing work to the professionals.

Jody's tips for buying a car
  • First figure out why you need or want the car. "It's a lifestyle choice, so you need to figure out your reason," Jody says. "What problem are you trying to solve?" The answer to this will likely make a big difference in the vehicle you purchase.
  • Once you know what you're in the market for, compare options online. Look at safety and crash ratings, pricing, and included features or options.
  • Know that everything is negotiable. It can be a good idea to shop at two or more dealers, and have a good idea of what you're willing to pay. Competition will give you an edge.
  • If you have a trade-in, make sure you find out its value in advance. There are many websites to help you.
