When I was getting a flat repaired recently, I was told that I should replace all the tires on my car. The cost would be between $400 and $500. Is there enough value in the car for this to be a good thing to do or would I be better off just replacing the car?

My 1987 Toyota 4Runner has a wacking noise (for lack of a better description!) from (it sounds like) the left front end, that starts at about 40 mph and increases as the vehicle speeds up. I've checked for something wrapped up in the drive shaft and axles, but can't find anything...help!
