It is common knowledge that distilled water is free of minerals that cause rust and corrosion. Why do the auto and truck manufacturers not put distilled water in the cooling systems from the factory and advise consumers to use only distilled when changing or flushing systems?

Our 03 Civic, 116k miles, needs new struts. Mechanic says it will cost $1,000+, not counting replacing tires that may be too worn due to the old (original) struts. Also that with strut replacement it will need new alignment. 1. Is all this true? 2. Is $1,000-$1,200 fair or a ripoff?
