I am in the middle of buying a used car. I have narrowed it down to 2 vehicles. I live in Massachusetts and a trusted dealer has a 2012 Ford Escape Limited with 83,000 miles and a 2009 BMW X5 xdrive30i fully loaded with 96,000 miles. I am wondering what is the better SUV to buy?

Hello,

Thank you for writing in. There are a couple of considerations that you are going to want to make. First, on average the 2012 Ford Escape is going to be cheaper to maintain, and it has a higher JD Power reliability rating. However, the 2009 BMW X5 is going to have a sportier performance and is considered to be a more luxury vehicle. Both have average use for a used car with under 100,000 miles, which means you will likely get several more years of use before major repairs need to be made. When that time comes, you are going to spend more to fix the BMW than you will the Ford. The Ford escape is also a few years newer, so you may get more advanced technology. On the contrary, the BMW has a higher JD Power safety rating than the Ford Escape. Both are decent models to buy. It will come down to your lifestyle and what model makes more sense for you. Good luck!
