My wife often idles our 2014 Outback (boxer engine) on our mildly uphill driveway for up to an hour sometimes when the baby has fallen asleep in the car seat. With the oil pan at that angle do I need to be concerned that the oil pump has access to enough oil with the car in that position.

Thank you for writing in. Great question! The amount of time that the vehicle is kept idling is doing more harm than being on a hill, even a steep hill. The oil pump provides enough pressure to get the oil to all areas of the engine and, the vehicle being at an angle wont stop it from doing so. This is assuming the oil is full and clean. Low oil levels may lead to the issues that you are concerned about. Keep in mind that vehicles get poor fuel economy while idling, it causes excess wear to the engine that is considered to be unnecessary, and that it may lead to more carbon build up inside the engine. If you are worried about your carbon footprint, you may also want to consider the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere during that time.
