I have a 1994 Honda Accord EX. Its only had 2 owners and been very well taken care of. When I got the car, the radio was unplugged. So, after having the car for a couple months and everything running fine, my boyfriend decided to hook up the radio and it said "code". And i told him to unhook it because I can't remember why but it caused the battery to die previously. So he did, but almost immediately, the car started running terrible...dash lights n dome light going dim, gauges going up n down, the headlights/park lights dying, then eventually the entire car died completely. We got the battery jumped, but it didn't last no time. We then bought a new alternator, it ran great for a few hours in town, then died again!! PLEASE HELP!!! Thanks
Thank you for writing in. Honda is famous for their radio security issues. Due to a high theft rate, Honda included security settings for the radio. If the current radio is original to the car, then you will need to obtain a code that you can input to turn off the security system. If the radio is not original to the car, you will need to talk with Honda to see if the serial numbers are compatible with your model. Either way, Honda is the best source for the security codes.
It is very likely that all of your electrical problems are associated with the security fault from the radio being plugged in. To get your vehicle back in normal working order, unplug the radio. Have your vehicle's computer system reset either with an OBD-I scan tool or by leaving the battery disconnected for 20 minutes or so. This should clear any warning lights, and let the system reset. If it does not work, then a radio security code will be needed.
