Purchased 2011 Subaru Legacy (CVT) about 2 years ago with 70K miles (rental car). Currently at 111K. For the past few months, it stalls out when braking suddenly. Lights on dash illuminate, I put it in park, and just restart it. No noticeable issues when actually driving. Seems to shift and ride fine at city and highway speeds, but the stalling is getting worse. My usual repair shop doesn't do transmissions but suggested a solenoid issue. Waiting to take it to transmission specialist shop, but because the potential repair could be well over $1 K, I wanted to get another thought. Thanks.

Answers from the Automotive Experts

Helaine Kurot, Owner/Technician at 360 Automotive I would start with taking the vehicle to a shop that specializes in drivability and electrical repairs before jumping to a transmission shop. There are several things that could cause this issue that are not transmission related including a bad ground wire shorting the electrical system or an idle air control solenoid that is not operating properly. For additional assistance, please find an AskPatty Certified Repair Shop at and they can help you diagnose and repair the problem.
