I've had the battery in my Suzuki XL-7 changed because of dead cells indicated by Wal Mart, and air in tires. Two days later, Check Engine Light came on. No indication of problems on dashboard other than CEL. How do I get the light off?

Answers from the Automotive Experts

Gelina Aquilina, Service Advisor / Mechanic at You need to take the car to a mechanic so they can scan the system and check for codes. Usually the check engine light is tied to smog/EVAP issues, so the possibility of it being connected to the battery & tire pressure is unlikely; that's probably a coincidence. You'll have to perform the necessary repairs to "get the light off."

Helaine Kurot, Owner/Technician at 360 Automotive The check engine light may or may not be related to changing the battery. Have a technician at least pull the codes and see why the check engine light might be on. Many new vehicles have an idle relearn procedure that needs to be done when the battery is disconnected/replaced. This could cause the MIL to come on. The procedure may be listed in your owners manual. It is also possible that the MIL is on for something completely unrelated to replacing the battery. There are thousands of things that can cause the MIL to come on. Depending on what is causing the light, the technician pulling the codes may be able to reset the light as well.
