My key sometimes will not turn off my 2007 Pontiac Torrent when I stop and try to get out. I put the car in park and go to turn the key off but it turns to the first "click" and gets stuck. I have to let it "rest" for a few seconds/minutes I hear clicking sounds and then it will turn all the way off so I can remove the key. What might that be?

Answers from the Automotive Experts

Amanda J. Pierce, MBA Shodi, You may need to look into replacing your ignition switch, the tumblers on the inside of the switch may be failing. Note, if you have a lot of keys and heavy key chain, you can cause your switch to prematurely wear.

Gail Dunn, Owner at Women's Automotive Connection Sorry you are having this frustration. I sounds as if the ignition switch is going bad. You should find a reputable shop and have them diagnose it. It is internal to the steering column and if it is making the clicking noise after a few minutes, it is trying to get in the right position. These are electronic and sometimes hit in the wrong place when they are breaking down. A diagnosis would tell you if you need a new switch, or just some relay that controls it.
