How does he lock the car and then get in it?
I suspect he lost the key in the car or the electrical/computer system is malfunctioning.
Nothing I have been able to find says you can start the car without the intelligent key. There are two possibilities. First, the key is inside the car and you have not found it yet. It could be between seats or under a mat. I suggest a more through search.
Also, at the risk of being obvious, have you looked to see if the key in in the port made for it. The chip in the key is necessary to start it. It must be somewhere in proximity. The battery will eventually die, and you may not be able to start your car. I would call a Nissan dealer and ask if there is a locator fob the fob that they can determine where it is.
