The check engine light on my 2003 Toyota Avalon is giving me an error code: po 446 442?

Answers from the Automotive Experts

Gail Dunn, Owner at Women's Automotive Connection Most check engine lights are associated with the emissions system. These codes indicate an "evap" , or evaporation leak. The most common cause of this is not tightening the gas cap completely. Most click a couple of times when you replace the cap after gassing up. Try to notice when the light comes on and whether it goes off after a while. After the appropriate drive cycle after fueling, it mat go out until next time. The leak could be somewhere else in the system, and if comes on and stays on, you should take it to a shop and have it checked.

Gelina Aquilina, Service Advisor / Mechanic at P0446 Toyota - EVAP System Vent Control Circuit P0442 Small EVAP system leak detected - Missing Fuel cap - Incorrect fuel filler cap used - Fuel filler cap remains open or fails to close - Foreign matter caught in fuel filler cap - Vent control valve harness is open or shorted - Vent control valve circuit poor electrical connection - Faulty vent control valve

Maryann Croce, Owner at Croce’s Transmission Specialists Hi Kenny, On your 2003 Toyota: This could be as simple as a loose gas cap. Check the gas cap and have your favorite shop clear the codes and see if the codes come back. These codes are emission related and will need to be addressed for the vehicle to pass smog or emission testing. Good Luck.
