When I fill the tank on my Nissan Xterra, the nozzle shuts off every few seconds. Every time I go to the gas station it takes about 15 minutes to fill the tank ( 15 gallons ). what should I do?

Answers from the Automotive Experts

Amanda J. Pierce, MBA Farshad, You may be looking at a fuel shut off switch malfunction, there is a baffle in the tank that can become damaged causing fuel to splash up in the nozzle prematurely causing the pump to cut off.

Amy Mattinat, Owner and Author at Auto Craftsmen Ltd There is a problem with the evap system of your car. Sounds like something is clogged. You should take it to an auto technician to diagnose the problem so you can fill up your gas tank without this annoying problem.

Gelina Aquilina, Service Advisor / Mechanic at There's usually a valve in there that prevents the fuel from coming back out. It's common for those to go bad & it sounds like that's what's going on with your Xterra. You'd need to take it to a mechanic to replace it.

Helaine Kurot, Owner/Technician at 360 Automotive The vent tube may be restricted, bot allowing air to leave the tank as fuel goes in. Take it to a shop and have it checked out.
