My 2007 Jeep Commander once started went into drive but would only go about 20mph and the R N D light on dash would not go on. Shut off and started again and no issue this time. will a low oil level affect the transmission?

Answers from the Automotive Experts

Amanda J. Pierce, MBA Mike, Low engine oil will not affect the transmission, but low trans fluid can cause a world of trouble.

Barb Petrey, President - DBK Enterprises Inc at Jiffy Lube No if you are low in engine oil it will not affect the transmission. If you are low in transmission fluid it will. Look in owners manual for the RND code

Helaine Kurot, Owner/Technician at 360 Automotive Low transmission fluid can cause all kinds of issues, but it sounds like your vehicle's computer detected an issue and put the vehicle in "limp" mode - While not convenient, limp mode allows the vehicle to get off the road and hopefully prevent catastrophic failure of expensive parts. Some times the vehicle will do this because of a minor glitch in the computer, dirt on a chipped key, etc and will never duplicate this symptom again. If it has not given you any issues since, I wouldn't worry too much about it. If it does it again, take it to a repair shop for a full system scan for ALL computer modules on the vehicle. This requires a professional level scan tool.
