When the outside winter temperatures fall to 32 and I have condensation and ice on my windows. My defroster and heater do not work on my 2006 Saturn Astra. Saturn looked at it and kept saying there is nothing wrong and other mechanics don't believe me. Driving is dangerous when you cant see out your windshield. Any ideas?
Make sure that the air flow switch is not on 'Recirculated Air'. It needs to be on 'Outside Air'. When it's cold out, the recirculated air can cause the windshield to get all foggy & then freeze.
If that doesn't work, then you need to take it to a technician and maybe have it send the night, so they can turn it on when it's cold and duplicate the problem.

Make sure your heating and cooling system is not set to recirculate. It has the u shaped button. You don't want the same air circulating in the car. Also make sure your compressor is working.

Your heater core may be clogged. I would go to a shop and have your cooling system pressure checked and specifically ask about the heater core. If a shop doesn't believe that you know your own car, it might be time for a new shop!

The colder it is outside, the longer it will take the vehicle's cooling system to warm up. The vents will blow cold air until the engine starts to come up to operating temperature. This may take several minutes for the engine to accomplish warming up.
The engine will warm up quicker if the blower motor is off. Give the car a chance to warm up before turning on the heat/defroster.
If it is taking an excessive amount of time (10 -20 minutes when its really cold out) for the vehicle to warm up and start blowing warm air, the thermostat may be sticking open and should be replaced.
