My 2004 Nissan Maxima makes a rattling noise when I accelerate. What could cause this?

Answers from the Automotive Experts

Amanda J. Pierce, MBA Lisa, You may have a heat shield that is loose and rattling on the underside around your exhaust pipe or catalytic converter. Its worth having your car inspected during your last oil change.

Amy Mattinat, Owner and Author at Auto Craftsmen Ltd Hi Lisa, It could be as simple as one of the heat shields on your exhaust has come loose and you hear it rattling.

Gelina Aquilina, Service Advisor / Mechanic at That could be SOOO many things. If & when you take it in, make sure you're very specific about the noise; when does it happen, what's the RPM's, do you hear it more often when it's cold or around turns, etc.

Helaine Kurot, Owner/Technician at 360 Automotive Many things can cause a rattle. I would start by having the exhaust heat shields checked.

Maryann Croce, Owner at Croce’s Transmission Specialists Lisa, On your 2004 Nissan Maxima, A rattle noise can mean that something is loose on your vehicle. Could possible be a exhaust shield. They tend to rot out or loosen up over time. A road test will help a technician determine what kind of noise it is. They may also want to inspect the vehicle under a lift. Good luck.
