I went to the dealership for winter tire removal & was told that I should replace my front brake (only 10% left). Also that I should have the back brake washed (has 80% left). I know I must replace the front brake (about $500), but what about the washing? Is that necessary? Thank you. Chris

Answers from the Automotive Experts

Helaine Kurot, Owner/Technician at 360 Automotive If the rear brakes are drum brakes, they may should be cleaned and adjusted periodically. On a drum brake set up, there is nowhere for the dust to go. Over time it will accumulate in the drum and will make noise. The rear brakes will also go slightly out of adjustment causing the front brakes to wear quicker than normal. Occasionally cleaning and adjusting the rear is not necessarily a requirmentment, but it is a good idea. If you have disc brakes in the back, its not a bad idea to clean and grease the slide pins and clips in the back. This will keep your brakes from locking up or dragging and they will last longer. Again, this is a recommendation, NOT a requirement. If you are unsure of what the dealer is talking about, ask the writer (or the technician) to show you whats going on and explain what they are doing and why. If it is a legitimate service that is needed, they will have no problem with this, including showing you the brakes on the car while they have it up in the air. If they can't explain what they are doing or why they are doing it, find another shop ASAP.
