Lorraine, Any make or model vehicle can have a check engine light on and the light won't stay on unless there's a problem. The most common reason for the light on a 1998 Saturn S-Series is a faulty oxygen sensor. It costs about $190 to repair, including parts and labor. It may seem like your car is driving fine, but if you ignore it you'll potentially do more damage to more expensive parts on your car. And when you ignore the check engine light it often impacts gas mileage, so you may be pumping extra money into the tank. It's best to have the problem diagnosed by a trusted mechanic. We suggest shops and dealerships with ASE certification. You can see other common problems and repair costs for your Saturn at www.carmd.com/Scorecard. Safe driving!
