I really really want a 2009 convertible beetle for my first car! Is this car safe? Does it have good MPG? I'm 5'7 with long legs, would that matter and I need to carry my golf clubs with me daily. Would this be a good first car for a 16 year old girl?
According to MSN Autos (http://autos.msn.com/research/vip/safety.aspx?make=Volkswagen&model=New%20Beetle&year=2009), the 2009 Beetle was rated at four out of five stars for the NHTSA crash tests for Driver and Passenger front frontal crash test, as well as the NHTSA rollover test. The 2009 Beetle was rated at five stars (out of five) for the front side crash test and three stars for the rear side crash test. IIHS rated the Beetle with a "Good," their highest rating for crashworthiness in every injury measurement. These scores indicate that the Beetle is a safe vehicle.
Fuel economy was rated at 20 mpg city and 29 mpg highway.
As far as your size, only a detailed test drive will tell you if you will be comfortable in the car. Be sure to bring your golf clubs with you to ensure they will fit in the car along with you.
For my first car, I wanted to buy a used Fiat Spyder convertible. I was in love with that car, but my father thought it was a poor choice for a girl's first car. 30 years later, I still disagree. Only the girl and her family can discern what is the best first car for her: it all depends on who is paying for repairs and the condition of the car she is buying. Trust your family's input, your parents will have your best interests in mind.
First check the cost of insurance for a girl your age for this convertible. If you can afford that, I would go try one out for size. Only you can decide if it's a good fit.

The gas mileage on VW Beetles is between 20-29 mpg, more on hwy less in the city. People who own Beetles give them good reviews. The passenger side has an acceptable safety rating while the drivers side has a good rating. I don't think your height or long legs would be a problem. That would be a fine car for a 16 year old girl. my sister has owned one for many years.
