Took car to repair shop for grinding type noise and smoke coming from left front wheel well. Repair shop determined caliper had seized and needed to be replaced. I agreed to that repair; however, later learned the hoof and rotor were also replaced (very expensive). Is it standard protocol to replace hoof and rotor when caliper is replaced? (sorry for any misspellings)

Lori Johnson, Owner and Instructor at Ladies Start Your Engines Dear Margo, It's possible that the rotor was damaged due to the heat the friction caused from the caliper being seized. However, this should have all been explained to you before the repair was done. Depending on the rotor thickness specification on the other side, meaning the that you have 2 rotors on one axle, they should have replaced the other rotor too. I'm not sure what you mean by hoof? Did the price increase without your knowledge, because that is something you can argue with them. They shouldn't do any replacement parts unless you OK it! Lori Johnson

Judy Curry, Co-Founder and Vice President of Marketing at Currys Auto Service Margo, Yes, the rotors usually should be replaced to ensure the integrity of the braking system. If the rotors get warped as a result of the caliper seize, they will make your braking unstable and would just have to be replaced anyway. Also, it makes sense to just do it all while the car is in the shop already - it will save you money in the long run. I also just learned that the heat from the calipers can cause some other areas of concern. The bearings might get damaged and a brake flush might be needed to flush out the old fluid. It is also recommended that the right caliper should be inspected. It may just be a matter of time until that ones goes, too! Just some things to watch out for.
