What is the average cost to replace a power steering pump? What is the average cost to replace front brakes?

Answers from the Automotive Experts

Amanda J. Pierce, MBA Alexandra, The average cost for a power steering pump and front brake replacement can widely vary depending on if you choose for a dealership or a mechanics shop to perform the repairs. Typically dealership parts and labor run higher than a certified mechanics shop. (Recommend an ASE Certified Mechanic) You may be able to save some money by locating a power steering pump and front brake pads, on the internet or local parts store (With a Warranty) Total "average cost" for a power steering pump replacement can be from $120- $250 depending on who and how you chose to have the repair performed. Total "average cost" for a front brake replacement can be from $70-$150 depending also, if you need your brake rotors resurfaced in conjunction with a pad replacement. Hope This Helps!! A. J. Valle

Judy Curry, Co-Founder and Vice President of Marketing at Currys Auto Service Alexandra, These both will vary greatly and will depend on the the make and model of your car. Labor will also be variable. The labor rate will differ between an independent shop and a dealership, so i would recommend you inquire about this before you authorize any work. As a reference, the power steering pumps can run $100-800 and labor can be as little as .5hr to over 5hr. Front brake pads can cost $30 - $145 and labor can be around .9-1.5 hours. These parts can be purchased in a parts store or can be purchased as remanufactured if you are looking for some less expensive options. I highly advise you to use the parts supplied and recommended by your trusted technician! Hope this helps!

Kerri Papajohn, Marketing Director at USA Sealants, Inc. The cost will depend on if you purchase the power steering pump from your shop (avg. cost: $250) which usually includes a warranty (both service & part) or if you purchase the part online and take it to a shop. I would check with the shop and make sure they will allow you to bring in your own part in which may waive your warranty right with the service as well if part is purchased elsewhere. In most cases, you can find warranty's with parts online or even on ebay (check seller's feedback first). In some cases, you can save even more money by buying slightly used parts from ebay or craigslist from salvaged vehicles (not advised). Depending on your finances, the latter could get you by temporarily and maybe permanently but it's definitely not my recommendation. Brake pads replacement average around $90, usually take an hour with labor (average $80/hr). You may be able to find a groupon or other coupon from a reputable service center for pads.
