I have a 01 Grand Prix supercharged GTP, lately it has been cutting off while I am driving and wont start. it cranks fine, but will not turn over. After about an hour it will finally start. I had the Battery changed, oil changed, and a tune up. They checked the system at Autozone and said, the alternator, battery and the starter are fine. Can anyone please shine some light on this?

Answers from the Automotive Experts

Breanne Boyle, Contributing Editor at I would take it to an ASE certified shop or dealership to have them look at it. While Autozone may be able to help with some things, they are not necessarily trained technicians.

Amanda J. Pierce, MBA Tmac10, By your description, it sounds like you may have a coil pack overheating, coil packs with age have this behavior of over heating and in safety mode shutting down. Coil packs are responsible for amplifying voltage, you may need to have them tested for premium performance to rule them in/out for the source of your problem.

Audra Fordin, Owner at Great Bear Auto Shop Tmac10, Something is obviously getting hot. As a great defense, your car is designed to shut itself off to prevent further damage from happening. I agree with Autozone, that is not a charging system issue. I would start with the engine light if you have one on. If not, look into the fuel system. Its possible you are losing fuel pressure. Mechanically yours, Audra

Barb Petrey, President - DBK Enterprises Inc at Jiffy Lube It's fuel delivery related. Have the fuel pump and fuel filter checked.

Laurie Sarno, Co-Owner at Super Girls Auto Hello Tmac10- to start with when the car is not starting a fuel pressure check for both flow & pressure should be performed - this will rule out possible fuel pump issues- you should also check the MAF sensor they fail commonly on GM vehicles - should the problem not have been resolved a complete engine management system diagnosis needs to be performed - hope this helps- Thanks Super Girls Auto.

Lori Johnson, Owner and Instructor at Ladies Start Your Engines Dear Tmac, I would check fuel pressure or possibly a bad cam or crank sensor. You need to get a technician to look at the vehicle when it won't start so that they can properly diagnose it. Lori Johnson
