Trumania,
Many models of vehicles have a "pick-up" tube coming off the oil pump, this may have disconnected starving the engine of oil. You may have debris from the bottom of the oil pan that is restricting oil flow, double check the oil level on the dipstick. You may need to remove the oil pan for a second look.
Hello Trumania,
Very interesting situation you have here. I must admit I have seen many successful do it yourself repairs. I have also seen many great attempts at do it yourself repairs. Hopefully the car engine is running great and the noise was a one time occurrence. It is impossible to tell you what happened or what the sound was, with out opening up the pan again. If I were you, I would not be too hard on your husband. He gets a gold star for effort.
