Right now I am having a problem with my 2008 Mitsubishi eclipse. The check engine light came on this morning, and this past Saturday I did a tune up and all is good. I disconnected the battery terminal this morning for about 5 minutes and it is still on. How can get rid of the light, it is driving like it is going to shut off.

Patrick,
You typically can visit your local auto parts store, they may offer a FREE diagnostic scan to find the root cause of your check engine light to give you a more firm direction to take for repair.
Hi there Patrick,
That was great you took the initiative to do the repairs. I understand you checked over the work you did and all looks good. Take a look at the invoice and re-check the part numbers that you installed. If you still have the boxes the parts came in, look at that too. It is important to make sure the parts installed were correct for your cars application. When you go to the parts store to double check, ask them to run the scanner and give you the codes coming up associated with the engine light. (or check out askpatty.com for a list of shops that provide this service) Reading the codes will assist you, in case it is just a coincidence the light came on after the maintenance you did.

Take it back to where you did tune up because either a vacuum line or sensor is disconnected or the sensor is bad
Hi Patrick,
You vehicle has turned on the Check Engine Light because the computer in your Mitsubishi Eclipse had detected a problem.
This problem could be something simple or it may be more involved. A Service Technician will connect to your computer,
retrieve a code and then start testing to find and solve your problem.

Your check engine light is coming on for a reason and turning it off isn*t going to make the problem go away, so let*s get to the root of the problem. It*s possible that something you did during the tune-up caused a pending problem to flair up. It could also be that your car needs to go through its drive-cycle before the light will turn off on its own. I recommend getting a diagnostic scan. You can have this done for free at participating auto parts stores or see a qualified automotive techncian. You can also use a product such as CarMD to run a diagnostic and get a report that details what*s wrong and what it will take to fix it. However you choose to address it, I recommend doing it soon, as ignoring a problem can cause more expensive damage to your car down the road.
Hello Patrick- you need to scan the car with an OBD II to be able to read the codes & then you can erase them- some AutoZones will do this for free- hope this help- Thanks Super Girls Auto.
Patrick,
The check engine light will not make a vehicle drive poorly. It illuminates when there is a problem that involves engine performance, transmission performance or emissions. Having done a very recent tune-up, I would first recommend rechecking the work. Make sure the plugs are all gaped correctly and installed properly. Also, make sure none of the plug wires have been damaged or improperly installed. If you cannot find a problem with the tune-up, it may just be a coincidence. I would then suggest bringing your vehicle to a trusted technician that can scan the car for codes and at least narrow down the system that is causing the problem.
