If you are replacing the transmission filter, it is recommended to follow the procedure of replacement through a publish repair manual. You should ensure that you are replacing the correct part.
If the muffler is in the way, that would have to be removed and replaced to get to where you are working.
I too have been in this situation many times.
Sometimes I think a job I am working on is going to be a cinch. Hours later, turns into more of a task than expected.

It*s a big job. You have to take the exhaust down. You may consider a total fluid exchange instead of the filter change . Otherwise unless you can do that you should take it to a certified technician.
