You can have your alternator tested and any auto parts store that offers to do so, and most are for free. You may have too much pre-load on your charging system this can be caused by a failing alternator.
The engine is being slowed down when the AC is on. You need to take it to a good mechanic

Hello Nancy- best guess is engine management system is not receiving input that the compressor is active- the other thing it may be is a bad AC compressor or blockage in the AC system- hope this helps- thanks Super Girls Auto.

The most probable cause would be that the compressor is seized. In this case, you would need to replace the compressor and probably a few other A/C parts.
