There is a bumpy sheet of what looks like aluminum that covers a small section underneath my car. Due to weather conditions and salt put down on the roads the metal has rotted away where it was once held in place. Now it is hanging and drags when I drive. I did not receive a handbook when I bought the car (from boyfriend's relative) and I cannot find any sort of diagram on the car. I'd like to know what this metal sheet is and what I can do to keep it from dragging for the time being until I can take it in to get it looked at. Thank you!

Answers from the Automotive Experts

Amanda J. Pierce, MBA Nicole, You may be looking at the brush guard protector that is under the underside of the carriage. They can be affixed by small set screws on the underside. and you may take a look to see if you can temporarily remove this until you have it properly secured.

Barb Petrey, President - DBK Enterprises Inc at Jiffy Lube It is either a skid plate or a heat shield. Any place that works on cars can look at it and either remove it or zip tie it in place

Judy Curry, Co-Founder and Vice President of Marketing at Currys Auto Service You should just take it in and have your shop look at it. Unless you can get under the car it may be difficult to secure. Something like this can be difficult to address without actually seeing the vehicle. Better to be safe and get it looked at then sorry later for waiting!

Pat Fleischmann, Director of First Impressions at Community Tire Pros & Auto Repair Nikole, You must be speaking of the auto Engine Splash Shield. Engine splash shields are the devices designed to protect your vehicles engine from water intruding the cars engine which causes corrosion and results to an ineffective engine. Engine splash shields are the small piece located below your cars engine. They are usually made of high density polyethylene to serve their purpose excellently. If you can get someone to wire it up until you can get it into a shop to be replaced would be a quick fix! Don't wait to long though...
