In replacing a serpentine belt on a mini cooper S there is very little room; what is the best advice on loosening the tensioner

Answers from the Automotive Experts

Amanda J. Pierce, MBA Ray, You can try using a ratcheting wrench in the tight space, you may have enough clearance.

Bogi Lateiner, Owner and Technician at 180 Degrees Automotive Hi Ray - there is a spot that fits a half inch drive - they actually make a low profile tool for it - but a half inch breaker bar should work. Remove the vent valve for better access. Alternatively you can jackup the vehicle on the right front side and remove the right front wheel and wheel liner. This should give you both better visability and menueverability. Good luck - hope that helps. Bogi Lateiner 180 Degrees Automotive, Inc.

Laurie Sarno, Co-Owner at Super Girls Auto Hello Ray - there is a special tool available for low clearance applications- they are available at most Snap On dealers- that would be my best advice to you- hope this helps- thanks Super Girls Auto.

Suzanne Grego, Technician at City of Philadelphia Fleet Management Ray, Unfortunately, engineers do not ask technicians for their opinion when designing vehciles. If they did, my life would be a lot easier. Some things that may help - use a long extension, try it from a different angle - maybe even from under the car, try a wobble extension, or get a friend with small hands to help. Good luck. Suzanne
