Hello Maggie- A rack and pinion assembly is the part that enables the vehicles front wheels to change direction when the steering wheel is turned. This system replaces the steering gear or steering box found on older vehicles and is still used on trucks. Remanufactured rack and pinion assemblies vary in cost from $150 to over $1000 depending on the vehicle and source of the part (dealership or aftermarket parts source'i.e NAPA Carquest etc) Labor to replace is additional, I charge $200-$250 plus alignment (strongly recommended when replacing rack and pinion assembly) Of course, labor rates may vary, and it is not inconceivable for some shops to charge as much as $700 for labor on this job. I do not know where you live so check on Ask Patty for a certified dealer or repair facility in your area- hope this help- thanks Super Girls Auto.
