Family returning home from out of town,check engine light came on today,60,600mi.
no visible problems car running fine,what is likely prob? Not the the gas cap.

There are many many things that can cause a check engine light to come on. If the vehicle does not seem to be behaving any differently, than it is probably safe to continue driving until you get a chance to have it checked out by a certified mechanic.
You can always have the codes read for free at most auto parts stores, however you should know that most repair shops will want to scan the faults themselves when you bring it in.
