About 8 weeks ago,I hired for one week because i wanted to use it for a small holiday with my family. A friend of mine asked me whether we could hire it together because he had some few things he wanted to do; so we decided incase i wasnt using the car he could use (for a short period of one or two hours). So my name was on the car rental contract (i was the hirer and used my credit card to pay) and his name was also on the contract as somebody who was also allowed to drive the car. On 2 ocasions he asked me for the car to buy some things at the supermarket. On the second occasion, he took the car and never came back or contacted me. So i immediately contacted the rental car company and informed them of what had happened. They told me that i was mainly responsible for anything that would happen to the car because i gave it to him. We never had of him for 2 weeks and on the 3rd week, the detectives reported that he was arrested in a neighbouring country (Germany) and that the police there will not release the car until investigations were over (he was certainly caught with with some illegal subtance in the car. its now about 8 weeks ago and the rental company have told me that i have to pay 100 euros for each day that i had delayed with returning the car plus a fine 50 euros each day. So thats almost 8000 euros i have to pay so far. My question is,is there any sort of insurance that covers such an incident (that surely wasnt caused directly by me)? I know now that i should never have done this.
Was theft insurance included in the car rental price? Read your contract carefully. Be sure to get a copy of the police report and I suggest you contact the BVRLA and file a complaint http://www.bvrla.co.uk/Consumer_Advice/consumer_advice_using_the_BVRLA_conciliation_service.aspx
