Hello,
I am living in Finland for 6 months and need to locate a car for my 20 year old son who lives in Indiana and will be working this summer in Reno Nevada. I am not sure if car rental companies will allow him to rent at his age. Can I find a short term
lease for him to take over or does he need to be 21 years old to do this? What advice
do you have for us? Thanks. Sheila

In short the answer is no...you cannot lease for 6 months. Rental companies do rent to 20 somethings all of the time, as long as he has car insurance. You might also want to consider having him purchase a high mileage import like a Honda or a Toyota...if he can pick up someones old "commuter car" for an inexpensive price then he*d probably save $ in the long run...and it only has to last him 6 months. Heck, if it*s cheap enough he can even donate to a charity when he*s done!
You need to be aware that some lease companies do not want the vehicle to leave the originating state, some rental companies have age restrictions and you can find this out on their web sites or by calling the companies directly. You might be ahead to just purchase a low cost used vehicle for him to drive that can be titled in his name so you don*t have any liability for the vehicle. What ever you decide you or he need to do due diligence before entering into any contracts that may have requirements that restrict your use or movement of the vehicle.
