Here's a pretty good website on winter driving. Take a look at number 9, it talks about sliding. Any time a vehicle is sliding on ice it is hard to control because the wheels are no longer gripping. I think the important thing to remember is to let up on the gas so that you aren't continuing to slide at a high rate of speed.
