After reading some review online from Edmunds and JD Power and Associates the 2008 Volkswagen Passat received an excellent rating in terms of reliability. JD Power rated it a 9out of 10 in this category.
The Passat comes equipped with a basic warranty covering four years or 50,000 miles, and there is a five-year/60,000-mile power train warranty as well.
They has not been much posted for the 2009 as of yet in term of the reliability rating.

I have not driven a Passat, so I can*t speak from personal experience. I have owned 4 VW Beetles and was very pleased with my old used 1958, the 2000 New Beetle and my 2005 Beetle. We were not as pleased with the 2006*electrical issues and traded it for a small SUV because we needed a larger car.The other three were great VW products. I have only known 2 people who have owned Passats. One bought a used 2005 and had problem after problem. The other bought hers new*a diesel and loved it. She commuted 60 miles a day to work and said she*d never drive anything else.
If you have a private mechanic you trust, you might ask him/her if there*s seem to be any reoccurring issues with the Passat.
