Thanks for being there and answering my question. I want to buy a used bmw 528i. I bought my last bmw 528i from a German woman in Washington,d.c. It was immaculate, and a great car. I gave it to my son because he was crazy about it, and want to buy another used bmw 5 series. I noticed that similar make, model, and # miles cars are more expensive when offered for sale by a dealer. Plus I do not know if the mileage is truly accurate.
so my question is "ASSUMING EVERYTHING IS MORE OR LESS THE SAME, IS IT BETTER TO BUY FROM A DEALER, OR PRIVATE PARTY...AND WHY ?
The advantage of purchasing from a dealer is that you have recourse should there be any issues with the vehicle, you can also purchase an extended service contract at the dealer at the time of purchase. The mileage on the vehicle must be accurate when you purchase a vehicle it is a federal offense to alter the mileage and any and all ethical dealers are very careful to insure the mileage is as stated. When you purchase from a private owner you are responsible for the vehicle in an "as is" state and the seller has no responsibility to do any repairs on the vehicle that are not stated on the bill of sale. You should always have any vehicle checked out by your personal mechanic to insure it is in good condition and has no major mechanical issues before you complete any purchase.
