Is it important to the life of your fuel pump to keep your fuel tank level at or above 1/4 full? My friend says modern cars have an in-tank fuel pump and gasoline acts as a coolant. Low levels in the tank reduces the cooling effect and the pump wears out quicker. This sounds ridiculous to me, is he correct?

Lori Johnson, Owner and Instructor at Ladies Start Your Engines Dear Terry, This is actually true. The fuel pump is electric and by putting it in the tank it allowed it to be kept cool by the gasoline. I would say that keeping your tank no lower than 1/4 tank is good practice. Less than this can also cause debris from the bottom of the tank to become sucked up and possibly clog the fuel system. Here are a couple articles that you can read about the fuel pump. Lori Johnson
