Is there a book or resource available that will aid in starting a car inspection shop? I don't have a background in the automotive industry (I graduated with a degree focused more on psychology and philosophy) but I am a quick study and highly motivated. I'm only interested in inspection, tires, brakes and oil changes - no major repair work. I plan on hiring qualified people to work on the cars but need to build a business plan and have a starting point with respect to machines, computer programs, space requirements, cost estimates, etc..
Any assistance in this area would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your all your help and time.
I teach the safety inspection license in PA. In order to have an inspection shop here you must have a shop, apply to the state to become an inspection station and have at least one technician that holds a safety inspection license.
Depending on what state you live in, you can probably get information on their motor vehicle department website. I know that Pendot has this book available on-line that gives you the requirements and how to become certified. Hope this helps.
