The automatic gear shift on my 2003 Toyota Camry has started locking up and I cannot drive. The AAA guy gave me a temporary solution (he showed me a small area to the left of the gear shift that was hidden, opened it up and when I press it down, the gear shift moves. Why is the car doing this-can you tell me? Any idea what it should cost to repair?
It sounds like you may have a bad neutral safety switch.
This switch keeps you from shifting the vehicle unless your foot is on the brake.
It could be expensive to replace. Maybe a couple hundred dollars. The part is usually located on the transmission.
I would suggest you take it to a dealer and have a technician diagnose it properly.
The place that you're pushing is just a manual override.
