Hello: I have a BMW X3 which only has about 5k miles on it. Several weeks ago the indicator light came on showing that I needed to have it serviced soon. I called BMW because it seemed like it was too soon since the car has so few miles. They said that it could be that the gas cap was not properly put back on and that the light comes up for several weeks after as a result. I just wondered if you had heard of that? Thank you in advance for your response!

Lori Johnson, Owner and Instructor at Ladies Start Your Engines Dear Patricia, You can definitely get a check engine light on if you don't turn your gas cap a good three clicks or so. Check your owner's manual to find out more about this. Usually this does not turn on the service soon light though. Again, look in your owner's manual and see which light you have on and then you'll have a better idea of where to go from there. If it's for the gas cap, it usually goes off after a day or so.
