Whenever you have a check engine light on it means that there is a sensor in the engine that is not working properly or is getting a bad reading.
The best thing to do is to take it to a technician who can put a scan tool on the vehicle and read the codes. Until you know what codes are coming up, you would simply be guessing at the problem. Hope this helps.
