I have a 1997 Avalon with 150000 miles. the dealer noticed some oil around the valve cover and suggested repair. I have not noticed any oil spillage. Does this need repair? What is the time unit for such a repair. Thanks

Amanda J. Pierce, MBA Francis, There is no real set mileage on the replacement of valve cover gaskets, it really has to do with condition. Usually valve cover leaks start with a seep from the cover, oil runs down the side of the block and you may never see a visible leak where you park. It usually takes no more than an hour and a half for replacement. AJ Pierce

Suzanne Grego, Technician at City of Philadelphia Fleet Management Francis Wright, If you are planning on keeping this vehicle for a long time, the repair may not be a bad idea. The problem will definitely not get better, and actually, will most likely eventually get worse. If you plan on only keeping the car for another year or so, I might suggest you let it go, but PLEASE keep an eye on your oil level. Checking your oil level at least once a week and always before long trips is a good idea. Also, be aware of any puddles under the vehicle where it is parked. Good luck. Suzanne
