It is hard to find a good, reliable used car for $850.00. Yes it has new brakes and a new starter. But what kind of shape is the rest of the vehicle in, and how long will it run before you need to do any other work on it? In my experience, you need to spend at least $4000 to get a used vehicle that probably will need another $1000 dollars worth of repairs and maintenance to be a decent car.
The only way to know if this would be a good vehicle for you is to take it to a trained automotive technician and have them do a thorough used car inspection on it. This could cost you $100. That may seem a lot to spend on a $850.00 car, but this car could easily turn out to be worthless. If you bought it without having it checked out you might be throwing away your $850.00 dollars.
The Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare has a car purchase allowance for TANF participants in the Employment and Training program. Clients may receive up to $750 towards the purchase of a car and up to $250 for car repair.
