Alice,
I would price out a used motor from a reputable salvage yard, and get various quotes from reputable shops on a head gasket replacement. If the Cougar is due for other services, such as timing belt replacement, spark plugs, coolant flush and so on...it may be cost effective to purchase a used motor. I would weigh out the pros and cons on this one and see which best fits your situation and budget.
