As soon as you add all-wheel drive to the equation, the fuel consumption goes up.
This being said, I drive a Honda CRV and get about 26 mpg on average. For an SUV, this works for me.
It has great visibility and handles really well on all kind of roads. It also is very comfortable for the folks in the back seat, and has tons of room in the way back.
I just love this vehicle and would invite you to take one for a test drive and see if it meets your wants and needs.
