If a vehicle is damaged enough for them to declare it a total loss, its probably not safe to drive. You may have severe frame damage (the bones that keep the car intact) that would sacrifice the safety for you and the people with you in your car.
There are so many good pre owned vehicles out there now, It might be worth it to go look at a local dealer and see what they can do for you.
